PSYCHIATRY

 

Introduction:

The department of psychiatry started as the "mental Hygiene Clinic" under the Faculty of Social Work, MS University in 1952. It was taken over by the government of Gujarat in 1965, and became part of the Medical College.

Department of Psychiatry was headed by

  • From 1967 to 1991 by Dr. A.B. Khurana

  • From 1991 up to October 2018 by Dr. P.R. Vesuna

  • From November 2018 to October 2019 by Dr.Rakesh R. Gandhi

  • From November 2019 to February 2020 by Dr. Bharat N. Panchal

  • From march 2020 by Dr. Rakesh Gandhi

The department also provides training for undergraduate doctors (interns) and post-graduate students of Psychiatry. It admits three students annually to the course of MD Psychiatry from both the state and national levels and has two positions for Senior Residents. It is also involved in the training of psychology, social work and nursing students.

The department caters to the outpatients from OPD 11. It has an indoor facility of 40 beds, which include both psychiatric and de-addiction patients. Medications are provided by the hospital and electro-convulsive therapy is conducted in the Ward.

• 5 students are admitted annually since year 2020 for the course of M.D. Psychiatry from both all India & state level.

• Postgraduate Educational Regulations and Teaching Schedule of Department of Psychiatry

The department of Psychiatry runs a well organised teaching schedule covering basic sciences, general Psychiatry and mental health, clinical psychology and sociology, sub speciality of Psychiatry like Child Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, De addiction, Legal Psychiatry etc.

The training is given in the form of lectures, seminars, case conferences, journal clubs, ward rounds, psychotherapy supervision and dissertation. At least 80% presence is required for every term.

Special services provided by department of Psychiatry during COVID-19 Pandemic:

(a) Counselling services provided to people who were in quarantine.
(b) Training of counsellors for providing psychosocial care during COVID-19 pandemic in liaison with SIHFW, Vadodara, GSACS Ahmedabad & UNICEF Gujarat.
(c) Preparation of a manual for health care provider “Ensuring safety & wellbeing through psychosocial support during COVID-19 pandemic in liaison with SIHFW, Vadodara, GSACS Ahmedabad & UNICEF Gujarat.
(d) Providing tele-psychiatry support & counselling to existing & new patients who could not come to hospital.
(e) Providing counselling support to general population for emotional issues arising from COVID-19 pandemic.
(f) Both faculty & resident doctors provided services in both COVID & suspected COVID wards in our hospital & in GMERS gotri hospital.
