(Last updated on 01.12.2014)

Sir Sayajirao General Hospital (SSG Hospital) is a tertiary care Teaching Hospital attached to Baroda Medical College run by Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Gujarat. It was started in 1865 as the 56 bedded Countess of Dufferin Hospital. This was then over by the State Government in 1907 and renamed the S.S.G. Hospital after the erstwhile ruler of Vadodara, Maharaja Sayajirao II. S.S.G. Hospital is designed in the indo-Saracen style. It is the largest referral hospital in Central Gujarat.

It forms the teaching hospital component of Medical College Baroda. It also houses the Government College of Physiotherapy and Government Nursing College. It caters to the primary, secondary and tertiary health care needs of the people of central Gujarat and adjoining states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. It also participates in various community outreach and national programs.

Total Number of Sanctioned beds of SSG Hospital are 1513.

Funded by the Department of Health and Family Welfare Government of Gujarat, it renders yeomen service – practically free of cost – to underprivileged sections of the society and the common man. The Rogi Kalyan samiti of the Hospital which generates funds from various sources funds the management of people below poverty line and tribal patients free of cost.

In 1946 foundation stone for medical college building was laid by the erstwhile ruler of Baroda Sir Pratapsingh Gaekwad. Due to the efforts of Dr. Jivraj Mehta, the then Advisor to Government of India and Bombay State on Baroda matters, the ground floor was completed in the year 1949. Dr. M.D.D. Guilder, the Health Minister of Bombay State inaugurated it on 16 June 1949. The first class was of 40 students. For initial development, the institute was entrusted to Late Dr. A. N. Deoras - the first Dean and Medical Superintendent of S. S. G. Hospital. The first MBBS examination was held in April 1954. The Medical Council of India and General Medical Council of Britain recognized the degree awarded.
