PATHOLOGY

Brief Introduction of the Department

The Pathology Department consists of different sub laboratories such as Histopathology, Hematology and Clinical Pathology, Primary sample collection center, Immunohistochemistry laboratory, Cytopathology laboratory, Cytopathology OPD, and Autopsy laboratory. The Department has Museum containing various pathology specimens and teaching sections consist of Lecture halls, Practical class, Demonstration room, Seminar room, Pathology Library and Research Laboratory for medical Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Paramedical (D.M.L.T., Physiotherapy, Nursing and M.S.C.) students.
The Pathology laboratory has been accredited by NABL, ISO 15189. The Department is having Laboratory Information System (LIS) for daily reporting, quality management, inventory and maintenance of the laboratories. The LIS is connected to all laboratory services (i.e. Pathology, Microbiology and Biochemistry). The HIMS is linked with LIS so clinicians can access patients' reports instantly in wards.

We provide the students comprehensive knowledge of the mechanisms and cause of disease in order to enable them in achieving in-depth understanding of the natural history and clinical manifestations, evidences and end result of disease in term of repair or cure, complications and consequences. We provide the knowledge of alterations in gross and cellular morphology of organ in disease states. Undergraduate teaching is done as per Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) Curriculum which includes Foundation course, AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics and Communication skill) and Elective posting. CBME Curriculum helps students to Observe, Enumerate, Demonstrate, Assist, Counsel, Analyze, Integrate, Guide, Communicate, Correlate, Interpret, Critique and Collaborate.

■ Teaching learning done through Didactic lectures, Seminars, SGD( small group discussions),SDL(Self directed learning), DOAP(Demonstration-Observation-Assistance-Performance), Case studies etc.
■ Practical with demonstration of gross and microscopic features of the organs
■ To train students in field of pathology with reference to hematology, cytology, histology and clinical pathology in diagnosis
■ Evaluation done by formative and summative assessment which includes Practical and theory aspect
■ At the end of the course the student should be able to :
(1) Perform simple laboratory tests, interpret lab test data and distinguish between normal and abnormal data of the laboratory results and clinic-pathological correlation;
(2) Integrate the causes of disease and relationship of different etiological factors (social, economic and environmental) that contribute to the natural history of diseases most prevalent in India.
(3)Draw a rational scheme of investigations aimed at diagnosing and managing the cases of common disorders;
(4) Understand biochemical/physiological disturbances that occur as a result of disease in collaboration with pre clinical departments.
